Learn how to paint lovely fluffy cumulus clouds in oil paint easily - with a couple of big brushes and a few colours. I will take you through step by step starting from a quick overview video then the ins and outs of the materials you need to get the best results before we get stuck into it. Before you know it, your gorgeous billowy cumulus clouds will be born! Clouds that can become the feature of your oil painting instead of the last minute thing in the background!
If you have not used oil paints before you could do this workshop. I believe this is suitable for all levels. With the right brush, you will get good results. The course is in real-time, so you can see exactly what I am doing. You could paint your clouds quite fast if you preferred them to be more expressive following exactly the same method here but not getting as 'blendy' as I do or you could keep going and really soften them up. It is up to you. I have provided a bit of both so. you can adapt to your own style as a painter. There is a little fast speed video after the intro to give you a teaser of the work to come.
First, we go through the materials, and the list is not long. The brushes do matter I find. I am always saying this. It is a great idea to invest in a couple of really good brushes, and in my material list, I show you which ones to get. It just makes the job so much easier. I explain the 'make up' or anatomy of the cumulus clouds through the workshop so you can far more easily understand what you are doing inside that big mass. The guessing stops, and as a result, your 'result' is better. This helps you to 'just know' how to paint them with ease. There are many types of clouds of course, but we focus on these big dramatic type in this workshop. All the others are easy once you learn these big ones. Along the way, you will see how you can add in other colours also to zing up your clouds a bit.

Your Instructor
Hi, I'm Helen Norton. I am currently live in sunny Perth in West Australia. I have over three decades of a very succesful exhibiting art career behind me - including over sixty solo exhibitions under my belt. In recent years I felt a very strong urge to come out of my lovely solitude in the studio, and do something for other artists instead of just my clients who have provided me with incredible patronage to date. I still love painting, and in fact taking a dive into teaching has created a deeper love of it. However, I now feel its time to hand over the skills!
After running some very succesful live workshops, in my home state, I discovered I could make the transition from artist to teacher, which is not as easy as one would think! What I wanted was to share as far and wide as I could, not just with the locals, so thanks to technology, I can welcome you to my online courses.
I hope you will join me on a wonderful creative adventure where I can share my experience and years of learning through various courses on different aspects of the art vocation. My mission is to save you tons of time working everything out like I had to through so much trial and error, although what artists does not like exploring? I will give you my very best in tips, techniques and insights into how to paint, and also help, with how to move past blocks, and fears, and especially to build confidence. Mostly this will be pragmatic and step by step demonstration of different processes of creating artworks. I can't wait for you to pull up your easel alongside me in the studio so we can paint together!
